Passport vs Birth Certificate When Cruising

This is one of the most frequent questions we’re asked when helping a client book a cruise. Do I need a passport? And the short answer is: maybe.

The truth is, passport requirements vary from cruise line to cruise line, so you need to be sure and read your particular cruise line’s terms and conditions. There are a couple of rules that tend to hold true across the board, but there are exceptions. Your Marigold Travel Company agent will do their very best to ensure you are aware of the rules for your cruise line, but ultimately, it’s up to the passenger to determine what they need to sail.

When a guest is sailing from a U.S. port to a foreign country, then back to the same U.S. port, a passport is generally not required. Adults over the age of 16 will need a valid photo ID and a raised-seal, certified birth certificate showing you are a U.S. citizen. Under the age of 16 typically only needs the birth certificate. Again, this is a general rule and may not apply to your specific sailing.

If your cruise begins in a foreign port, you’ll obviously need a passport to get to that port, so yes, you’ll need a passport.

It’s always best to read the terms and conditions, or search your specific cruise line’s website to determine if you need a passport or not.
